SMILE laser eye surgery
SMILE
What is SMILE surgery?
Refractive surgery SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a modern technique for laser vision correction. This technique is mainly used to treat myopia, whether or not combined with astigmatism, by reshaping the cornea so that images are formed correctly on the retina.
How does SMILE surgery work?
The procedure is based on the use of a femtosecond laser.
-
The laser creates a microscopic lens (lenticule) in the cornea.
-
A micro-incision (approximately 2 to 4 mm) is made.
-
The surgeon carefully removes the lenticule, changing the curvature of the cornea.
Who is the SMILE technique suitable for?
SMILE surgery is indicated for:
-
People with certain degrees of short-sightedness
-
Patients with or without astigmatism
-
Persons with a sufficiently thick cornea
-
A full preoperative assessment is essential to determine whether someone is eligible.
Procedure
-
⏱️ Duration : approximately 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes
-
💉 Anaesthesia : local anaesthetic drops (painless)
-
🏥 Hospital admission : outpatient (return home on the same day)
The patient remains conscious during the procedure and can quickly resume light activities.
A comprehensive eye examination will determine whether the SMILE technique is the most suitable solution for your vision.
